Sponsor Organisation:

Kawartha Small Business Podcast

Brief Description Of Project:

Bridging the gap between businesses in the Kawartha who are having trouble filling vacancies and a pool of international student graduates who move away to look for job opportunities.

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide the Sponsor with insights into why employers in the Peterborough area may be having trouble filling vacancies when there is a large pool of international student graduates in the city. A detailed understanding of the factors that international students consider when making location choices would help to bridge this gap

Project Innovation:

Our Sponsor needed data to understand the gap between the employers saying they are not able to fulfill job postings and a talented pool of students leaving Peterborough saying they are not able to find jobs. We did the secondary research but to get the up-to-date results and also taking the current scenario into consideration, we surveyed 110 students to validate our secondary research data, we talked to Alumni to better understand the reasoning behind so many young talented students leaving Peterborough.

Challenges & Solutions:

Challenges:

  1. Getting potential interviewees for the primary research.
  2. Potential bias in survey responses.
  3. Time constraints in gathering the required information.
  4. Getting businesses to provide insights into their hiring needs.

Solutions:

  1. Used the existing network of our sponsor, faculty mentor, and our own network to identify and locate potential respondents.
  2. Designed questionnaires to minimize bias.
  3. Started early and assigned tasks for the most efficient allocation of resources.
  4. Used our available networks to find allies and supporters who can prove connections with employers.

Project Results or Progress:

An interim report was submitted to our sponsor which contains a summary of primary and secondary data that includes Permanent Residence (PR) Requirements for students, an outline of the challenges faced by current/graduated students and employers. Till now our project has identified what companies need to know in order to fill their job openings from a large pool of young professionals who would love to stay in Peterborough.

Our next step is to make sure the information that we found in our secondary research regarding employers having trouble filling job postings is valid here in Peterborough. So, we will be talking to some of the employers. We did get a chance to talk to:

  • Rebecca Mustard (Manager, Economic Development |Development Services, City of Kawartha Lakes)
  • Marcelo König Sarkis, P. Eng. (Senior Patent Agent – Canada & United States of America |Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada |Founder, Prima IP Incorporated)

Rebecca and Marcelo provided some great insights into the employer’s perspective. They also provided some contacts that we will be reaching out to,  to better understand the employer’s job requirements and to find out whether employers are aware of the student pool that is available in Peterborough.

Lessons Learned:

We learned that it takes sound research and analysis to bring new ideas to the table and the importance of communicating these effectively.

We learned different research methodologies to gather valid and accurate data.

We designed, conducted, analyzed and interpreted survey in a way that will reduce bias and help us collect authentic information.

We learned how to work effectively and efficiently as a team as our team consists of six members with diverse opinions and perspectives. We learned to use this as a strength in our teamwork.

We got a better understanding of the timelines required to gather primary research.
