BAA1211-1 Cambium Expansion


 

I previously went to Trent for Business and Psychology, and I’m currently working on my Advanced Diploma in Marketing. I classify myself as a psych nerd and really enjoy reading and exercising in my spare time. I’m very excited to take part in the projects showcase!

 

My name is Arika, I am in my 3rd year of the Marketing Program at Fleming College Peterborough. I always dreamed of owning my own business so I originally was in the Business Administration Program where I fell in love with the marketing side of things and switched to marketing. My goal is to help small businesses grow and be discovered as there are many great businesses people don’t know about.

Excel Spreadsheet for Cambium Engineering

Brief Description Of Project:

Our team is working with Cambium Engineering which is a consulting environmental engineering firm with multiple current locations. We are in the process of developing an Excel tool that Cambium Engineering can use to systematically narrow down their options for expansion in the future, based on indices that they consider important at a given time. We will also use this tool to help them narrow down where the current best location for expansion is.

Project Objective:

  • Cambium has experienced a great deal of growth since their inception in 2006
  • Their strategic objective is to expand while maintaining their core values as a company
  • They need to determine where the best opportunity is for them moving forward
  • Our role was to help them in their decision-making process

Project Innovation:

  • We presented them with four options for successful expansion, which they were then able to choose from
  • We are developing a flexible tool they can use to determine which areas have the most potential for expansion based on indices that they consider important

Challenges & Solutions:

Challenges:

  • Getting a clear understanding of what they wanted as a company;  we assisted them in determining their goals for the project & for their future expansion
  • The sheer breadth of available options was a major challenge, as it would be too time-consuming to do an in-depth analysis of every city & provide comparison analytics

Solutions:

  • Created an Excel spreadsheet with various city characteristics
  • Developed a process whereby they can adjust the weight of the principal factors based upon their needs at the time
  • This tool gives them the ability to systematically narrow down their choices based upon their most important indices & how they wish to weight these factors in the decision-making process

Project Results or Progress:

  • We are in the process of developing the Excel spreadsheet and inputting relevant data
  • Once it is completed they will be able to determine prime locations moving forward based upon the indices which they consider most important
  • Based on our own understanding of their requirements and the results from the Excel spreadsheet, we will provide an in-depth analysis of the top three promising areas
  • This will allow Cambium to make an educated decision about where to invest in as a business

Lessons Learned:

  • Team-work has given us a better understanding of how to work together and to capitalize on our individual strengths
  • Better knowledge of technical programs like Excel
  • We agree that we would strongly encourage companies to be more innovative & creative in their decision-making
