Brief Description Of Project:

Researching and recommending sustainable materials for an alternative shipping packaging

Project Objective:

The objective of our project is to conduct research on the potential introduction of a new packaging material i.e, wool-based thermal packaging into the Canadian market. As per our sponsor, Ellen Edney’s requirements, our team has carried out detailed research and has disclosed the outcomes in sponsor meetings.

Project Innovation:

Being in the initial stages of research for our project, we first looked into various industries that might be able to use wool-based thermal packaging. We then researched suitable packaging liners that can be used to absorb odours or stains. The level of recyclability and biodegradability of the liners was another important factor for Ellen. Based on Ellen’s interests, in the coming days, we plan to test out a prototype within those industries.

Challenges & Solutions:

Ellen’s vision for her business is to expand into a new market, one that is new to the Canadian market i.e, wool-based thermal packaging, and she asked us to find out how receptive the market will be towards a new thermal packaging solution.

It was a challenge for us to start the research from the beginning as there is no existing product in the Canadian market. Upon research, we found that wool-based thermal packaging is a growing industry in countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. Gradually we became successful in developing information required by Ellen by applying the strategies we learned in our courses such as International Marketing, Global Business Strategies, Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovation in Global Marketplace,  along with gaining input from our mentor.

Project Results or Progress:

As per Ellen’s requirements so far we have researched on competitors from wool-based packaging in Canada and disclosed the results to Ellen, we have also found niche businesses that Ellen can target for testing out her prototype.  The team is currently looking at vendors who will be able to supply the raw materials required for the product.

Lessons Learned:

In every meeting with Ellen, a new challenge arose. We learned that in this competitive world nothing stays constant and we need to change our preferences such as marketing strategies and develop new skills based on how competitors make decisions. Through our research, we also learned that we cannot attain a hundred percent sustainable liner for packaging products.
